Portugal
Portuguese Republic · Capital: Lisbon
Portugal pairs a mild Atlantic climate and low costs with some of Europe's most accessible routes: the D7 for the financially independent, a Digital Nomad (D8) visa, and a Tech Visa for skilled hires. English is widely spoken, healthcare is strong, and permanent residence is available after 5 years. Since 19 May 2026 naturalisation takes 10 years of legal residence (7 for EU and CPLP nationals), counted from the date the first permit is issued.

ETIAS start date withdrawn, no new date set
Not yet in force. In mid-July 2026 the EU removed its 'last quarter of 2026' target for ETIAS, the online travel authorisation for visa-free visitors to Schengen countries. The official site says ETIAS is not in operation and no applications are collected. The fee will be EUR 20 once it launches; the EU says it will announce a start date several months ahead.
